È originario dell'Europa, dell'Anatolia, del Maghreb e dell'Asia occidentale, dalle isole britanniche a sud del Marocco e della Tunisia, a nord della regione del fiordo di Trondheim in Norvegia e ad est del Caucaso e dell'Iran settentrionale, con una piccola popolazione isolata nell'Himalaya occidentale.
